What polling place should I go to?

Please choose one or more polling places from the list at http://co.humboldt.ca.us/election/PollingLocations020508.pdf and let the VCC know by calling (707) 633-4130 or e-mailing integrity@VoterConfidenceCommittee.org

The best times to observe are from 6-7:30am and 7:30pm till the ballots leave the polling place.

What do I need to take with me to the poll?

  • Camera (digital, video, film)
  • Notebook
  • Pencils and/or Pens
  • A Clipboard

What can I do at the polling place?

  • Wear a name tag
  • " Introduce yourself and explain why you are there
  • Ask lots of questions
  • Write down the names of the poll workers
  • Write the serial number of the tabulator machine
  • Watch for any machine problems and record them
  • Watch to make sure there are enough supplies for every voter
  • Record anyone being turned away from voting, and why, if you can find out
  • Listen for any inappropriate remarks
  • Try to stay out of the way, but somewhere you can see everything
  • Stay calm, be polite
More specifically, what can I watch for with the machines?
  • Are they being repaired?
  • Are they accepting or rejecting ballots?
  • Did you see a machine being replaced?
  • Did you see a memory card being replaced?
  • Did anything at all look weird to you while you were observing?

What else should I look for and do about it?

  • Polling place that has been changed or closed at the last minute. ~Call the media.
  • Long delay in the opening of the polling place. ~Call the media
  • Long Lines. ~Find out why and record that.
  • Lack of signs telling voters where to go. ~Record lack of signs then find a poll worker to remedy the problem
  • Police surveillance or check points at the poll. ~Record, record, record!

What do I do at the end of the day?

Call the VCC at (707) 633-4130, e-mail us at integrity@VoterConfidenceCommittee.org, or stop by 322 Grotto St (Pathfinders Books) have some refreshments and tell us everything you observed!
